Usually women are represented in paintings as shy, quiet and docile, in traditional outfits. These paintings are often painted by men. However, outside in the real world, women are challenging these roles; most young women in real life do not reflect this image. I want to present a new image of Burmese Women – confident, independent and strong – painted by a Burmese woman.
The women in these paintings are very conscious of how and why they are rebelling against the traditional stereotypes. They are teasing an audience who think that women are secondary, inferior and subservient. The masqueraded face in the painting indicates that the girl is happy and proud of who she is since she is pushing beyond the social limitations.
