Usually women are represented in paintings as shy, quiet and docile, in traditional outfits. These paintings are often painted by men. However, outside in the real world, women are challenging these roles; most young women in real life do not reflect this image. I want to present a new image of Burmese Women – confident, independent and strong – painted by a Burmese woman.
The women in these paintings are very conscious they are rebelling against the traditional stereotypes. They are teasing an audience who think that women are second level, weak and dependent. The face shows that the girl is happy and proud of who she is, even though she is pushing beyond the social limits.
Chuu uses traditional women’s longgyi as her canvas to challenge the custom that women’s clothes should not hang at the same level as men’s. She hopes that other artists will follow her lead, and try to reflect the reality of women in Myanmar today, rather than following a stale and tired old convention.
