Outsiders inside the Lacquer box
acrylic on canvas
122 x 91 cm (48X36 inches)
Usually women are represented in paintings as shy, quiet and docile, in traditional outfits. These paintings are often painted by men. However, outside in the real world, women are challenging these roles; most young women in real life do not reflect this image. I want to present a new image of Burmese Women – confident, independent and strong – painted by a Burmese woman.
The women in these paintings are very conscious they are rebelling against the traditional stereotypes. They are teasing an audience who think that women are second level, weak and dependent. The face shows that the girl is happy and proud of who she is, even though she is pushing beyond the social limits.
