‘Shadows in the Ayeyarwaddy’ captures the poetic dance of light and darkness along the heart river of Myanmar, the Ayeyarwaddy. My work in the realm of fine art is an exploration of contemporary social struggles, seeking to illuminate concealed cultures and perspectives. Central to my artistic narrative is a deep concern for the societal position of women, a theme that resonates throughout my portfolio. Through a blend of paints, vintage photos, text, and memories, I present subversive images of women in ‘traditional’ attire, challenging preconceived notions and inviting viewers to reassess their gaze on the feminine.
This particular piece delves into the essence of memories in Myanmar, serving as a metaphorical and literal connecting thread. Memories transcend their temporality to become a battleground, reflecting social struggles. Throughout generations, they have been vessels for traditional notions of femininity. Yet, within the ebb and flow of recollections, a movement of resistance emerges, confronting both military and patriarchal powers. ‘Shadows in the Ayeyarwaddy’ is a visual narrative that weaves history, culture, ethnicity, and religion into the tapestry of struggle, showcasing the Ayeyarwaddy as a powerful symbol of connection and discord. The play of shadows on its surface echoes the complexities of the societal tapestry, inviting contemplation on the interplay between tradition and rebellion, history and change.
