YANGON TRAIN

acrylic on fabric

61 x 61 cm (24×24 inches)

After some time studying the way Myanmar society treats women, I realized that this oppression is not only in recent times. For centuries women have been treated as second class people, and this has shaped our history and culture. But the status and condition of women has not been static – in certain eras women of a certain class have been allowed more freedom to be themselves.

In this series of paintings, she wanted to show women from other eras, to remind people to stop creating an imaginary history and instead, to look back at what the real history was and to learn from the past.
